Sweet Peas

Seed planting depth: ½ inch
Soil: Well drained and preferably amended with compost
Sun: Full sun
Support: Trellis
Water: Consistent water especially in stretches of hot weather or drought
Cultivation
- Sweet Peas are cold tolerant and do best when planted in late winter or early spring. Here in Oregon (zone 8B) we start our peas in 4 inch pots or 2 inch soil blocks in an unheated greenhouse starting in November/December and move them out to their final location in late February or early March.
- Once the plant is 6 inches tall, snip out the stem above a set of leaves so that 2 sets of leaves remain on the plant. This will encourage more branching and more blooms.
- All parts of the flowering sweet pea are considered poisonous so please take caution especially with children and pets.
